Optech: A Key Driver of Québec’s Economy
Optech, a College Technology Transfer Center (CCTT) affiliated with Cégep de La Pocatière, John Abbott College, and Cégep André-Laurendeau, is a major contributor to Québec’s economic development. Its applied research and technology transfer activities in optics and photonics foster technological innovation in companies and support a strong, knowledge-based economy.
In 2013–2014, with an operating grant of $280,000, Optech directly generated 27 jobs and nearly $2.2 million in projects, creating even greater wealth for Québec. “The indirect benefits, though harder to quantify, are just as significant,” explains Maroun Massabki, Director of Development and Innovation at Optech. “For example, we work with several SMEs to support the development of their products and processes. Without local expertise to meet the needs of Québec companies, these projects would likely be outsourced abroad — leading to lost jobs and investments.”
Not only does each dollar invested in Optech yield an eightfold return, but this leverage effect also helps retain and grow Québec’s scientific expertise, while training the next generation of researchers and technologists.
As Premier Philippe Couillard stated during his last election campaign: “We see innovation and knowledge as the cornerstone of an ambitious economic vision — one that will revive entrepreneurship, boost exports, and ensure the sustainable and exemplary use of our natural resources.” Optech shares the Premier’s conviction that Québec must expand its strategic niches in science by strengthening business competitiveness and fostering job creation.
This is precisely what Optech works toward. In the past year alone, the research center has helped about 35 local companies increase revenues, create jobs, and bring high-value-added products — developed right here in Québec — to market. Our companies innovate and remain competitive while creating jobs and wealth for Québec’s economy.
The Economic Contribution of Cégeps and Technology Transfer Centers
Across Québec, 49 CCTTs like Optech collaborate on research and innovation projects with local companies. According to a study by KPMG-SECOR (The Economic Contribution of Cégeps and College Technology Transfer Centers), CCTTs make a significant impact on Québec’s economy by supporting approximately 4,000 companies per year in the development of their research and innovation projects. The profitability resulting from CCTT–business collaboration is estimated at $210 million.
